IRRIGATION SCHEMES

GOVERNMENT has completed the construction of a 270 hectares Lusitu irrigation scheme in Chirundu in Southern province which is set to benefit 405 farmers.
Southern Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa says government has made strides in promoting irrigation development in Southern Province through construction of Irrigation schemes to support production of crops all year round.
The Lusitu Irrigation Scheme in Chirundu has been constructed through the Irrigation Development Support Project (IDSP).
“To promote irrigation development, a number of headways have been put in place and these include: completion of 270 hectares of the Lusitu irrigation scheme in the Chirundu district to benefit 405 farmers through the Irrigation Development Support Project (IDSP),” Mr Nanjuwa said.
Mr Nanjuwa further noted that rehabilitation of a 348 hectares of Buleyamalima and Nzenga irrigation schemes in Sinazongwe has commenced to promote irrigation development.
He was speaking when he officially opened the Southern Province Agricultural Tourism and Commercial Show held at Maramba Stadium in Livingstone.
Mr Nanjuwa further observed that government has completed rehabilitation of three dams, namely; Ndondi in Pemba, Ngolongozya in Zimba, and Makaba in Namwala to support irrigation.
He also noted that construction of 51 hectares of mini-irrigation schemes in Gwembe, Kalomo, Kazungula, Siavonga, and Monze districts under the Strengthening Climate Resilience of Agricultural Livelihoods in Agroecological Regions I and II SCRALA Project and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations is underway.
“The new dawn administration of president Hakainde Hichilema is committed to promoting irrigation as it holds immerse potential in enhancing all year round food production, ensuring food security, promoting climate change adaptation, and lifting households out of poverty, by providing a reliable water source for crops and reducing reliance on rain-fed agriculture,” Mr Nanjuwa observed.
Mr Nanjuwa pointed out that irrigation enables farmers to diversify their crops and increase yields.
And Agricultural and Commercial Show Society of Zambia President Dr Bernard Moonga says shows are learning platforms which can contribute towards attaining the maize production target of 10 million metric tonnes by 2027.
Meanwhile, Southern Tourism and Agricultural and Commercial Show Society President James Mwanza says this year’s show has drawn 176 exhibitors following good policies put in place by government. -NAIS.
